‘We still live in fear’: Lebanon escapes attacks
Tens of thousands of people have become refugees in Lebanon. Khaled Hussein, 20, fled Syria as a child. He describes the bombing that forced his family to flee again.
-
Khaled Hussein filmed this video at his home near the Lebanese city of Nabatiyeh. It shows Israeli airstrikes hitting just a few hundred meters away and hiding in the base here. As the bombing continued, Khalid and his family decided they had to escape. They are among at least 800 people who have fled the current war between Israel and Hezbollah at this UN facility south of Beirut. Since last week, Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon have killed more than 700 people and forced more than 90,000 to flee their homes. Khaled, like many others sheltering here, is not the first to flee war. In just a few days, hundreds of facilities have been set up across Lebanon to shelter people displaced by the violence. Many of the people here are Syrian and Palestinian refugees living in Lebanon. For Imad Ahmed, a Palestinian refugee living in southern Lebanon, this is the third time he has fled war with Israel. But this time I had to do it with my kids. Outside, dozens of people are hoping to get in but are being turned away because there is no space in the facility to welcome them. As the number of internally displaced people increases, Lebanese authorities fear a humanitarian crisis if the civil war continues.
