Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic were eliminated from the semifinals of the Nitto ATP Finals on Thursday after suffering heartbreaking tiebreaker losses to Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten. The loss had even greater significance for Koolhoff, who was playing his last match on the ATP Tour.
After the match, Koolhof’s fellow players and ATP staff took to the court to honor him for his outstanding career.
“It’s definitely mixed feelings. It’s been a pleasure playing on tour over the last 20 years. Thank you to everyone who took the time to come here to Center Court. I would especially like to thank Mekta for playing with me in my final year,” said Koolhof. “It has basically always been a dream to end my career at the Nitto ATP Finals here in Turin, and even though I couldn’t achieve it today, I am very grateful and happy to end my career here.”
Koolhof has won 21 tour-level titles, including the 2020 Nitto ATP Finals with Mektic and the 2023 Wimbledon with Neal Skupski.
Stefanos Tsitsipas was one of the players who joined Koolhof on the court. The Dutchman’s fiancée Julia Goerges was also there.
“Thank you to everyone who came out,” Koolhof said. “Thank you so much.” “Thank you to everyone for your support throughout the year.”
