with victory West Indies qualified for the Super Eight. New Zealand have the slimmest chances of progressing to the next round of the tournament.

Rovman Powell West Indies captain: I’m very happy. We were in trouble and two of us were in deep. We’ve already discussed that someone had to act as a blinder, and it wasn’t easy wicker for bad weather. Sherfane’s innings was fantastic and gave us confidence during the innings break. We tried to replicate what the New Zealand bowlers tried to do well. At the halfway point we sat down and discussed hitting a solid length and spinners spinning the ball. We must utilize what we have. There is no fast bowler like New Zealand. I admit they (the spinners) did a good job even with the wet ball. It was a truly brilliant night and someone had to get up and do the math.

Kane Williamson New Zealand captain: It was good. I had a feeling it would be quite tricky once I hit certain areas, and that proved to be true. The quality of Sherfane’s innings was the difference. He was incredibly impressive and quite disappointing for us. The batting depth in their side was quite beneficial. We took the aggressive option to take wickets and T20 is a game of small margins and unfortunately it didn’t go that way. [on Santner bowling the last over] We know it and we trust it completely. The guys did that well in the first 12 overs but as I said it is a small margin and two three balls in an over could have gone big and the score could have been par or better. Be prepared and do what you can. The conditions here remain the same and we have no excuses. We need to keep getting better and keep finding ways to do those 10 to 15 runs that can make a big difference. We have to recover quickly, be back within two days, and be smarter. Learning is important and we need to pick ourselves up and go again.
