With a variety of upgrades, from rugged looks to a wealth of features, Apple Watch Ultra 2 can deliver the ultimate smartwatch experience.

Around this time last year, I’d only been receiving my new Apple Watch Ultra for a day, and it was already strapped to my wrist, ready to take on the 15K Tough Mudder obstacle course event. After using the Watch Ultra for 12 months, it’s proven to be the most complete smartwatch Apple has ever made, and overall one of the best smartwatches for me.

Let’s get straight to the point. If you already own an Apple Watch Ultra, there’s no compelling reason to upgrade to the Ultra 2. But if you’re one of the many people planning to buy their first Ultra wearable, I think this will be just fine in time. Here’s why:

Considering today’s economic climate with rising consumer prices, we’re a little surprised that Apple has been able to keep the price of the new Watch Ultra 2 the same as last year. Considering the titanium construction, integrated LTE radio, and sapphire glass display, $799 is very reasonable for a high-performance sports watch. This is even more true when you compare the Apple Watch Ultra 2 to other flagship GPS sports watches.

As far as what’s new about the model, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 incorporates a faster S9 processor, a brighter display, double the internal storage, and a series of recycled materials that don’t make the wearable feel any worse.

Watch OS 10 was released when the Watch Ultra 2 was announced, and it made the experience of using the Apple Watch an absolute pleasure, with new features for the side buttons and digital crown (Smart Stack), as well as spacious, information-rich watch faces. Optimized for Watch Ultra models.

Naturally, I placed the Watch Ultra 2 next to the first-generation Watch Ultra, and the two were virtually indistinguishable from each other. After increasing the brightness of both, I could barely tell the difference in standard lighting conditions, since Apple implemented the same ambient light sensor. But outdoors, where we’ll be making the most use of the Watch Ultra’s technology, it was clear that the Ultra 2 was much brighter (3,000 nits compared to 2,000 nits).

Ahead of the Watch Ultra 2 launch, I listed three features I wanted to see to warrant an upgrade, and while Apple didn’t offer any of these features, it addressed one of my desired features in a unique way. The LED flashlight on my Garmin watch is a tool I use every day. When you turn on the flashlight on your Watch Ultra 2, turning the Digital Crown now utilizes additional nits to increase maximum brightness.

It still doesn’t beat the Garmin LED, but it’s much more practical than last year for finding things in the garage or under the bed, lighting up a room at night, and finding your way outside in the dark.

Unfortunately, mapping is still limited on the Apple Watch Ultra 2, and the most notable change is support for offline maps if you have an iPhone in iOS 17. But the Compass app also received a subtle yet significant upgrade thanks to watchOS 10. Watch Ultra 2 now displays waypoints for your last detected cellular and emergency SOS location, so you know exactly where to turn if you find yourself in a dead zone. The Compass app also lets you mark camping spots, parking spots, and other useful waypoints.

Along with Watch Ultra 2, Apple has launched new carbon-neutral watch bands, with the Alpine Loop and Trail Loop bands available in three colors. I had a chance to test out the grey/green trail loop with the Watch Ultra 2, and all I can say is that it is very comfortable. I bought the Watch Ultra last year with the Ocean Band, but this time I think I’ll choose the Trail Loop due to the easy Velcro security support. An ideal watch band for more casual outings.

Lastly, as much as I love the Apple Watch Ultra 2 – its longer battery life, brighter display, expanded connectivity, and new watch bands – I’ve also enjoyed the improved mental health features through the Mindfulness app. It has now earned a prominent place in my app list and is entering my state of mind every day.

I now use the Reflect and Breathe utilities often. This utility has slowly but surely reduced my stress and has been a welcome addition to my Apple Watch usage. (Of course, all you need to use the Mindfulness app is an Apple Watch running watchOS 10. I love using it on the Ultra’s larger display!)

Buying advice from ZDNET

My primary SIM is currently living as an eSIM. iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple Watch Ultra 2 It will probably stay on my wrist for a long time until the next Ultra version comes out. Apple’s improvements this year don’t push the envelope in any particular way, but they’re still versatile enough to make the Watch Ultra the best flagship sports watch enthusiasts should buy.

If you don’t have an Apple Watch Ultra but are interested in purchasing one, the Ultra 2 is your best option. If you can handle the darker display and technically slower performance, go for last year’s product. Watch Ultra at a discounted price It’s not even the worst idea.

For me, the addition of a faster processor with Boost Flashlight and Siri support is a welcome addition. Apple’s move toward zero-carbon products is also a good move for the environment and something we can all support.
