The New York Giants went 9-8 in 2022 and finished 6-11 in 2023. They were notorious for starting games slowly, falling behind early and playing behind most of the time.
According to a recent analysis by Warren Sharp, the Giants have scored first in just 11 of their last 34 regular-season games over the past two seasons, a trend he correctly argues will determine their chances of winning.
As you can see, the team that scores first is at the top of the list.
The team that scores first wins 64% of games.
…and over the last 10 years, they lose 36% of the time when they allow their opponent to score first.
Number of games in which the team scored first in the last 2 years:
23 – Feet, Pie
22 – CLE, SF, DET
21 – Moon
20 – Latin America
19 – KC, JAX, LV
18 – Chi, Shin, Mia
17 – BUF, TB, PIT, TEN, DEN

The Giants’ overall scoring was a problem last season. They averaged just 15.6 points per game. Only Carolina and New England had lower averages.
They averaged 6.6 points per half last year, second-worst in the NFL, and ranked dead last in first-quarter scoring (1.5).
The Giants fell behind once last year, scoring 10 or fewer runs in seven of their 17 games.
Moving the ball was also a problem. Their 280.0 yards per game on offense ranked 29th in the league.
