The defending champion from the Beijing tournament has withdrawn from the China Open due to “personal issues”.

“I have to withdraw from the China Open in Beijing due to personal reasons,” Swiatek said in a statement. “I am very sorry as I had a great time playing and winning this tournament last year and was really looking forward to coming back.

“I know the fans will experience great tennis there and I’m sorry I won’t be a part of it this time.”

The China Open is scheduled to be held from September 25 to October 6.

American Jessica Pegula was knocked out of the US Open quarterfinals earlier this month after beating Swatek 6-2, 6-4.

The loss came just weeks after world No. 3 Aryna Sabalenka crushed Swiatek 6-3, 6-3 in the Cincinnati semifinals.

Last October, Swiatek won the China Open championship, winning 12 out of 13 sets. Swiatek won in Beijing, winning in straight sets over Coco Gauff in the semifinals and Liudmila Samsonova in the final.
