The Broncos have three months to decide on their starting quarterback before the season opener in Seattle, and Zach Wilson will likely get his chance this summer to prove he deserves to be under center come Week 1.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that Wilson, whom the Jets traded to Denver in April after three poor seasons, is “in the mix” to become the Broncos’ starter. According to the bleach report:.
“They are trying to recover. [Wilson’s] “I feel confident again,” Fowler said. “I was told he was in a positive mental state.”
The Broncos selected Bo Nix from Oregon in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft and left Jarrett Stidham as their remaining player after cutting Russell Wilson.
Now closer to home, Utah native Zach Wilson got his chance with the starters in an 11-on-11 drill at Broncos OTAs last Tuesday and struggled with an interception and some inaccuracy, according to the Denver Post.
Wilson is only 24 years old, but in 33 career starts, he has yet to live up to the hype that would have him be the 2021 No. 2 overall pick out of BYU.
After two poor seasons, the Jets acquired Aaron Rodgers from the Packers last spring and expected to contend for a Super Bowl while Wilson could learn under his idol.
But Wilson was immediately called back into action when Rodgers tore his Achilles four plays into the 2023 season.
Wilson was benched after Week 11, had the best game of his career when he returned as a starter in Week 14 against the Texans, and suffered a season-ending concussion in Week 15.
The Broncos acquired Wilson and a seventh-round pick for a sixth-rounder.
