The Broncos are pleased with how Zach Wilson has performed this preseason.

In a recent interview with the Denver Gazette, Broncos GM George Paton said: I praised the first round pick.He lost the starting quarterback competition to rookie Bonnicks, but “has all the attributes of a starter in the world.”

“He’s got all the tools to be a starting pitcher,” Patton said of Wilson. “It’s been pretty cool just watching him. Really, no expectations. He can just go out there and play football. He’s got all the attributes of a starting pitcher in the world. He’s still working out some things. We saw him really good last week (against the Cardinals). He can pitch as well as anybody in the league. … I think he’s going to be a starting pitcher in this league.”

Wilson, 25, began his career as the Jets’ starting quarterback in 2021 but was benched multiple times during his rocky three-year tenure in New York.

He was traded to the Broncos in April, joining a team that included veteran Jarrett Stidham.

Later that month, the team selected the Knicks with the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Wilson struggled early in the offseason with mixed performance in OTAs.

He later shined in the Broncos’ final preseason game against the Cardinals on Sunday, throwing for 255 yards and two touchdowns.

Wilson was named to the Broncos’ 53-man roster along with St. Ham, and supported the Broncos’ decision to name Nix the starter.

“Yeah, I was happy for him. I mean, I don’t think it’s that surprising, right? I thought he had a great camp. I told him I was happy for the opportunity. I really believe they’re putting him in a good situation. I [head coach] Shawn [Payton] “He did an amazing job,” Wilson said after Sunday’s game.

“He’s continuing to get better and better, so I’m excited to see what he can do, and I think he’s ready.”

With Denver giving Wilson a fresh start after his brief moment last season as a replacement for an injured Aaron Rodgers, perhaps his preseason audition will spark curiosity about another starting opportunity elsewhere.

The Broncos visit the Seahawks in their season opener on Sept. 8.
